During the 2022-2023 academic year, I had the privilege of completing a Fulbright grant in Cuenca, a city of 50,000 people on the eastern edge of Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha autonomous community. Despite its rich history and overwhelming beauty, Castilla-La Mancha is largely unknown to international tourists. In 2022, the region was the destination for only 200,100 international tourists, representing only 0.15% of the country’s visitors and second lowest of its seventeen communities. As I explored the mountains of the Serranía de Cuenca and the plains of La Mancha, I fell in love with my adopted home. With camera in hand and, often, bike beneath me, I set off to encourage other Americans and people from around the world to do the same.
